Joey Gubrian-Moss celebrates 70 with a Filipino fiesta

1. The fiesta queen of the day, Joey Gubrian-Moss, with her husband, David Moss.
The warmth of a Filipino fiesta, the charm of cherished traditions, and the unmistakable joy of old friendships came together as Iloilo society’s ever-gracious Joey Gubrian-Moss celebrated her 70th birthday in splendidly festive fashion.
The sprawling Joe Garden Beach Resort along Villa Beach in Arevalo, Iloilo City, became a colorful tribute to Filipino heritage as family, former classmates, and lifelong friends gathered for a delightful “Fiesta sa Nayon” celebration that captured the celebrant’s vibrant personality and love for her roots.
The resort was transformed into a charming village fiesta, where rustic elegance met playful nostalgia.
Vibrant shades of red, yellow, green, and blue mingled with softer touches of blush pink, sage green, and butter yellow, while bamboo, rattan, and nipa-inspired accents brought the warmth of the Philippine countryside to the seaside setting.
Overhead, strings of multicolored banderitas danced in the breeze, creating a cheerful canopy above the festivities.
A charming bamboo-and-nipa-inspired backdrop offered the perfect setting for photographs, while a miniature sari-sari store, stocked with familiar Filipino snacks, bottled soft drinks, and nostalgic candies, delighted guests with memories of simpler days.
The festive atmosphere was made even more captivating by guests arriving in their finest Filipiniana-inspired ensembles, turning the gathering into a colorful celebration of Philippine culture and personal style.
Good food, music, and cherished friendships
At the heart of the occasion were Joey and her husband, David Moss, who warmly welcomed their guests with the easy hospitality that has long endeared them to family and friends.
A generous spread of traditional Filipino fiesta fare celebrated the flavors of home, while lively music and cultural performances gave the afternoon a distinctly Ilonggo character.
The Iloilo United Music Cariñosa dancers, Rosalie Artajo, Chase Sanz, Sean Faderan, and Janice Tortola, brought traditional Filipino dance to life, while the Iloilo Music United Band kept the festivities spirited and engaging.
Beyond the entertainment, however, the celebration’s greatest pleasure was the company.
Among those sharing in Joey’s milestone were Gary and Cecil Abanilla-Gison, Glenda Abanilla-Valencia, Carmela Abanilla-Quintos, Pauline and Paul Measures, and other close friends whose presence reflected the many meaningful relationships she has nurtured through the years.
Her former classmates from CSCJ Batch ’73 added another affectionate dimension to the gathering, bringing with them decades of shared memories, laughter, and enduring friendship.
Family members, including Rain and Luke Gubrian, joined the festivities alongside relatives and friends, making the occasion as intimate in spirit as it was grand in presentation.
Seventy years, countless reasons to celebrate
What made Joey’s birthday especially delightful was its unmistakably personal character.
Rather than relying on extravagant formality, the celebration embraced the familiar sights, sounds, and flavors of Filipino life, creating an atmosphere where every guest could feel part of the occasion.
It was a fitting reflection of a woman whose warmth, graciousness, and appreciation for friendship continue to bring people together.
For Joey Gubrian-Moss, turning 70 was more than marking another milestone; it was a celebration of the people, traditions, and memories that have enriched her journey.
And as the afternoon unfolded against the gentle coastal setting of Villa Beach, one thing became beautifully clear: the richest measure of a life well lived is not the passing of years, but the friendships that continue to flourish through them.
Happy 70th birthday, Joey!
