PNVF wants to extend de Brito’s contract after impressive AVC tourney start

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) is looking to extend the contract of Jorge Souza de Brito, the current head coach of Alas Pilipinas.

This was confirmed on May 27, 2024.

De Brito, who took over the helm of the Philippines Women’s National Volleyball Team on short notice, has already turned heads by leading the team to an impressive 4-0 start in the ongoing AVC Challenge Cup.

This opening AVC campaign is a monumental moment in the history of Philippine volleyball, marking the first time the country has qualified for the semifinals of this prestigious international tournament.

According to PNVF president Ramon “Tats” Suzara, retaining de Brito long-term will be beneficial for the Philippines’ volleyball program.

“Coach Jorge coached the country to a first-ever semifinals stint in any AVC or Asian-level competition. That’s historic for Philippine volleyball,” said Suzara.

During the first week of the AVC Cup, de Brito’s squad overpowered Australia, India, Iran, and Chinese Taipei to secure a semifinal ticket.

With only a week to prepare against some of the best teams in the world, de Brito and his coaching staff were credited for devising quick game plans against their competitors.

“And because of that, there’s no reason that we’ll let him go. We’ll be appealing that he remains head coach of our women’s national team program,” added Suzara.

Before taking up the role as the women’s national team coach, de Brito served as head coach for the Akari Chargers in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL). The Brazilian coach had a four-conference stint with the Chargers but did not lead the young team to a single playoff qualification.
