The Oklahoma City Thunder passed their first test with flying colors after crushing the Los Angeles Lakers, 108-90, in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals on May 6, 2026.
Despite a long layoff fresh from a four-game series sweep of the Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma never lost a step and banked on its signature balanced attack to demolish the rejuvenated Lakers and go up 1-0 in the series.
The Thunder overcame an inspired start from LeBron James, who continued his stellar offensive showing in the postseason with 16 first-half points.
Los Angeles quickly jumped to an early 9-0 lead, but the Thunder immediately recovered, courtesy of Chet Holmgren’s scoring streak, steering Oklahoma to a 31-26 advantage after the first 12 minutes of action.
James tried to muscle his way every time he got downhill, but Oklahoma came prepared, receiving a bounce-back performance from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had a slow start in the first frame.
The Lakers did a great job blitzing Gilgeous-Alexander, deploying a quick double team every time he held the ball at the top of the key.
To force the Lakers to change their defensive scheme, Gilgeous-Alexander wisely gave up the leather upon receiving the blitz while flashing down the left elbow, where he started to hit his signature perimeter jumpers from his sweet spot.
The complexion of the game entirely changed in the second half, when the Thunder made life miserable for the Lakers offensively.
From a relaxed 1-2-2 zone defense, Oklahoma head coach Mark Daigneault switched to a surprising man-to-man scheme, but quickly changed to a 2-3 half-court set when the Lakers opted to run their offense through DeAndre Ayton in the post.
The unpredictable series of defensive changes caused the Lakers’ offense to stall as Oklahoma held them to their lowest-scoring half in the playoffs, with just 34 points in the last two quarters.
Los Angeles never restored order, failing to trim its deficit to single digits in the final period, and could only watch the defending NBA champs move three wins away from marching to the Western Conference finals.
Holmgren opened the semifinal series with a dominant 24-point outing, built on efficient 9-of-17 shooting from the field, including a perfect 2-of-2 from downtown.
Aside from his stellar offensive showing, the two-way star also stuffed the stat sheet, tallying 12 rebounds, three blocks, one steal, and one assist.
Despite a slow shooting performance in the first half, Gilgeous-Alexander stepped up in the last two quarters to finish with 18 markers, six dimes, three boards, and two blocks.
On the other hand, James led all scorers in the game with 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting, but his individual brilliance wasn’t enough to help the Lakers get the stunning win on the road.
Oklahoma will look to capitalize on its home-court advantage and race to a 2-0 lead on May 8, 2026, while the Lakers seek to equalize the series and head back home with momentum.
