New multi-purpose buildings are built by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo City District Engineering Offices to provide additional facilities among various schools in Iloilo City.
The projects include Iloilo City Sports Complex (Jalandoni Sports Center) at Jalandoni Memorial National High School in Lapuz district, and Administration building at Jaro National High School in Jaro district.
Citing a report from Iloilo City District Engineer Cesar M. Hipona Jr., DPWH 6 Regional Director Tiburcio DL Canlas said Jalandoni Sports Center will provide a resilient and safe structure for students, athletes and Ilonggos in general that will serve as venue for their academic, social, and fitness development.
“These buildings will provide a standard, comfortable, conducive training environment that would help Iloilo produce world class athletes,” Canlas said.
“Through this sport center, Iloilo City may be able to host major sports-related activities such as “Palarong Pambansa,” thereby boosting tourism and economy. This will further promote healthy lifestyle, sportsmanship and teamwork,” he added.
With a projected allotment of ₱200-million under the District’s Local Infrastructure Program (LIP), the Iloilo City Sports Complex is composed of three 2-storey buildings with the total floor area of 5,184 square meters.
Building A has the dimension of 40×20 meters; Building B with the dimension of 32×24 meters; and Building C with the dimension of 40×16 meters.
An initial amount of ₱50 million was released in 2020 to jumpstart the project, which involved earthworks and concrete works (footing, column, slab on ground floor, and partial construction of suspended slab on second floor).
The DPWH has also completed the construction of Multi-Purpose Building at Jaro National High School in Jaro district.
The ₱8-million building, funded under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) 2020, aims to provide the school and its students with a quality structure that can be used for school related activities as well as other events organized by the city government.
The 2-storey building may also serve as a temporary shelter for the local populace in times of calamities and other emergencies.
Meanwhile, Hipona, Jr. said the construction of a 2-storey community hall in Brgy. South Fundidor, Molo district was completed.
The ₱4.46-million project, funded under the Local Infrastructure Project (LIP) of 2021, involved the conversion of an old rundown building into a newly refurbished multi-purpose building.
“This project will provide the barangay and the local residents with a quality structure that can be used for various functions and events organized by the city government. The MPB may also serve as a temporary shelter for the local populace in times of calamities and other emergencies,” Hipona said.
