IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu offers 50 world slots

LAPU-LAPU CITY — Filipino age-group triathletes will chase 50 qualifying places for the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship when the IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu presented by Megaworld is held Aug. 9 at The Mactan Newtown in Cebu.

The qualifying race gives local competitors a rare chance to pursue world championship berths without leaving the Philippines.

It also allows them to experience the atmosphere, organization, and competitive standard associated with a premier international triathlon event.

Competitors will face a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike leg, and a 21.1-kilometer run on a demanding course that has become popular among Filipino and foreign participants.

The race will start from The Mactan Newtown Beach before taking athletes through Lapu-Lapu City and parts of the Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway route.

Sunrise Events Inc., the organizer, said 25 of the 50 available age-group slots are reserved for women as part of IRONMAN’s efforts to promote gender equality and expand female participation in the sport.

Qualifiers will earn the right to compete in the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship on Aug. 28–29, 2027, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Chattanooga is known for its outdoor attractions and U.S. Civil War history, as well as landmarks such as the Tennessee Aquarium, Lookout Mountain, and the Walnut Street Bridge.

The Lapu-Lapu event is part of an international qualifying circuit that includes races in Sweden, France, Canada, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Spain, Poland, Ecuador, Malaysia, Brazil, Germany, Estonia, and Austria, among other countries.

Its inclusion in the qualifying calendar reinforces Cebu’s standing as one of the leading destinations in international triathlon.

The 2026 staging marks the 12th anniversary of the IRONMAN 70.3 race in Cebu.

Over the past decade, the event has drawn elite professionals and thousands of age-group competitors while building a reputation for high-level organization and race execution.

More than 1,000 athletes representing 48 countries are entered in this year’s race, highlighting its continuing international appeal.

South Africa’s Henri Schoeman, the 2024 Lapu-Lapu champion and an Olympic bronze medalist, headlines the men’s professional field.

Schoeman won the 2024 race in 4 hours, 2 minutes, and 31 seconds.

Australian Olympian Natalie Van Coevorden leads the women’s professional entries and is expected to help drive another competitive elite contest.

Much of the attention, however, will fall on the age-group divisions, where Filipino triathletes will compete for category honors and an opportunity to represent the country at the world championship.

Under the qualification system, each male and female age-group winner automatically earns a world championship slot.

A slot declined by a division winner rolls down to the second-place finisher and then to the third-place finisher in the same age group.

The official roll-down ceremony will be held at The Mactan Expo after the Aug. 9 awards presentation.

For Filipino triathletes, the Cebu race represents more than another event on the competition calendar.

It offers them a chance to test themselves against leading international athletes in a world-class race environment on home soil.

A strong performance in Lapu-Lapu could ultimately carry them to one of the biggest stages in long-course triathlon.
