Eala turns back Pegula, becomes 1st Filipina to win WTA title

Finally, a Filipina is now on the Women’s Tennis Association’s list of tour champions.

After five years of roller coaster rides and grueling training since making her first appearance in a WTA Tour-level main draw, Alex Eala can now call herself a hard-court queen.

On Aug. 4, 2026, the 21-year-old Filipina tennis sensation scored a reverse sweep over top-seeded World No. 3 Jessica Pegula, 4–6, 6–4, 6–0, to claim her maiden WTA title in the final of the Mubadala DC Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington.

Despite trailing by a set while facing a rain-delayed championship match, Eala’s patience, tactical adjustments, and varied first-serve display helped her turn the match around in the nick of time.

Before the final was postponed until the next day, Pegula took a momentum-boosting 1–0 lead after converting a crucial break point in the eighth game of the set.

The American then held serve to love to retake the driver’s seat, 5–4, and broke Eala’s serve again to officially seal the 1–0 advantage.

Unfortunately, Pegula wasn’t able to ride her momentum after a rain delay forced tournament organizers to suspend the match and reschedule it for the next day.

Indeed, it was a sign from the heavens.

As the match resumed and the Filipina led 2–1, a retooled and rejuvenated Eala dominated the hard court in the second set and suddenly became a difficult puzzle for Pegula to solve.

After an inconsistent and passive first-set performance, Eala displayed improved shot-making efficiency as she added more depth to her groundstrokes, forcing Pegula to play a defensive game midway through the second set.

Pegula went from an offensive wrecking machine to an error-prone player. After a crucial break point in the 10th game of the set, Eala smelled blood, held serve, and leveled the final at one set apiece.

Perhaps the most underrated adjustment Eala and her camp made was immediately setting the tone with the traditional kick serve using a standard continental grip to neutralize Pegula’s first-return prowess.

Before the final, Pegula leaned on her tremendous first-return game, which resulted in big wins over Diana Shnaider, Anna Kalinskaya, and Magdalena Frech.

To do that, Eala unveiled a refined serving game, generating more topspin through the midcourt that Pegula failed to decipher in the final two sets.

Once Eala broke Pegula in the second game of the deciding set, the pressure to mount a quick comeback haunted the American, derailing her usually steady game.

The rest of the third set was an Eala exhibition as Pegula failed to withstand the Filipina’s all-around masterclass.

Name it. Court generalship, serving, defense, on-the-rise net pickups — Eala did it all.

The coronation was complete after Eala won a six-shot rally on match point. Seconds after Pegula fired a long return, the Filipina youngster knelt on the court and absorbed all the emotions she felt.

Eala capped her historic breakthrough title win with 80 points won, including five break points and 30 return points.

On the other hand, Pegula failed to find her groove when the final resumed, finishing her runner-up campaign with 61 total points won and four aces.

“To all my supporters, thank you guys,” Eala said during the post-match interview.

“Thank you to all my supporters, especially the Filipino community. Here in DC, back home, and wherever you are in the world, I feel all the love. Maraming maraming salamat, mga kababayan. I knew that whatever would’ve happened after this match, it would’ve already been a win for me, so thank you, everybody. I really look forward to seeing you guys again.”
