Mamoru Hosoda’s latest animated feature Scarlet premiered at the 82nd Venice Film Festival on Sept. 4 to a ten-minute standing ovation.
The time-bending anime made its world premiere before a full audience, with actors Mana Ashida and Masaki Okada joining Hosoda on the red carpet, at the photocall, and during the official screening.
The film will screen exclusively at SM Cinemas beginning Dec. 10.
Scarlet follows a princess from the past who enters the afterlife after a violent attempt at revenge fails.
She meets a modern-day man whose compassion challenges her to confront the fury that has consumed her for centuries.
When her nemesis returns, she must decide whether to cling to her hatred or embrace a life beyond vengeance.
The official trailer is available at youtu.be/8D4-ZihpaC4.
Hosoda said he hopes the film conveys a message of love, inspired by his reflections on the post-pandemic world.
“As we witness heartbreaking conflicts around the world, I believe that finding love and choosing to live together in unity is what will lead us towards something better,” Hosoda said.
“That’s why I want to share this new film with the world — now more than ever.”
Scarlet opens exclusively at SM Cinemas on Dec. 10.
