Former UAAP Seniors Men’s Basketball Most Valuable Player Bright Akhuetie was named as a part of the Nigerian national team that is set to compete in the 2023 FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers.
Akhuetie last saw action during UAAP Season 82 with the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons and teamed up with Kobe Paras, Ricci Rivero, and Juan Gomez de Liaño.
The big man still has one year of eligibility left to play for the Fighting Maroons but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Akhuetie chose to go home to Nigeria.
Akhuetie was one of the most integral pieces during UP’s series of playoff campaigns after transferring from the University of Perpetual Help where he was also the star player of the team.
The Nigerian was also close in helping UP clinch back the UAAP championship trophy but fell short during Season 81 when they lost at the hands of Thirdy Ravena and the mighty Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Up to this date, it is still unknown if Akhuetie will return to the Fighting Maroons and play for one last season after averaging 14.7 points, 12.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest during his tenure.
Akhuetie will have the chance to play alongside ex-NBA players in Ben Uzoh and Ike Diogu who have been leading Nigeria on the international stage.
