RESTON, VA., USA – The ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Reston here glowed with purpose as Filipino American Cancer Care marked its fifth anniversary with the “Fashion for Love, Care & Hope” Charity Gala.
Founded in 2020 by breast cancer survivor and Ilongga broadcaster Josie Moralidad Ziman, FACC has grown from a small idea into a community-driven movement supporting cancer patients across the United States, the Philippines, the Middle East, and other countries.
“Five years ago, we didn’t have big money or big supporters,” said Ziman during the event. “We had big hearts, that’s how it all started.”
One of the evening’s major highlights was the announcement of PHP 56,000 (USD 1,000) in cash assistance to each of 16 cancer patients worldwide, demonstrating FACC’s commitment to direct, meaningful support.
FACC also honored 10 “Philanthropic Heroes”—individuals and couples who raised PHP 140,000 (USD 2,500) or more to fund services for patients battling cancer.
Among those recognized were Amabel and Alan De Leon, Melanie and Tito Dua, Leocita Talanas Sauter and Ray Sauter, and Chef Evelyn Bunoan and Oscar Bunoan.
Other honorees included Maria Teresa Ramos De Boer, Eul Johnson, Evelyn Talatala Clough, Ivette “Ivie” Pray, Belinda Thomas, and Terri Schantz.
The gala’s fashion show, curated by Global Fashion Director Bo Parcon from Iloilo City, featured designs from Carl Andrada, Simoun Andres, Cathy Ebrada, Toshimi Pacumbala, Bernhardt Collections, Alta Moda by Joenie Barredo, Timmy Ajulo, and Parcon himself.
The runway served as a platform for 150 models—survivors, patients, families, and friends—to celebrate resilience and cultural pride.
A standout emotional moment came with the debut of FACC’s original theme song, “Love is the Cure,” composed by FACC Ambassador Ronelo Sanchez Ladiao in tribute to survivors, caregivers, and loved ones lost to cancer.
Over the past five years, FACC has hosted fundraising activities such as Zumba classes, bingo nights, crab feasts, concerts, and fashion shows, even adapting with virtual events during the pandemic.
To broaden its reach, FACC launched a radio show, On the Air with FACC, to share survivor stories, raise awareness, and educate listeners on cancer-related issues.
Through partnerships with INOVA Hospital and INOVA Schar Cancer Institute, FACC has provided free cancer screenings to the community.
Healthy cooking classes led by Chef Evelyn and Oscar Bunoan further emphasized the importance of wellness through proper nutrition.
A symbolic milestone was the installation of the Bell of Hope in the Philippines, mirroring chemo bells in U.S. hospitals as a beacon of survival and encouragement for patients still undergoing treatment.
“None of this could have happened without you, our volunteers, beneficiaries, donors, sponsors, families, and friends,” said Ziman. “Each one of you helped transform a vision into reality.”
She thanked early supporters, newcomers, and even skeptics for helping shape FACC’s growth and purpose.
“FACC isn’t about one person,” she added.
“It’s about everyone we reach, the hope we share, and the love we offer. If you’re battling cancer right now, please know, we are here for you. You are not alone.”
As the evening ended, guests were reminded that FACC is not just an organization—it is a united force bringing love, courage, and hope to people confronting cancer.
“As we honor five years of service,” said Ziman, “we’re also looking ahead because this is only the beginning.”
With expanding programs and a community of committed supporters, FACC continues to prove that love in action can heal and empower.
