Jalen Duren might be on the move.
Despite helping the Detroit Pistons reclaim the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference for the first time in 19 years, the superstar center is looking to explore a sign-and-trade scenario when NBA free agency negotiations kick off on June 30, 2026.
According to multiple reports, Duren’s future with the Pistons might be in limbo after his camp and the team’s front office didn’t agree on the initial extension offer.
Duren is already eligible to sign a five-year, USD 287.1 million contract extension after making the All-NBA Third Team, but the Pistons are heading down a different route.
As per The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Detroit might include Duren in a package deal that would create more opportunities for the team to lure another big-name running mate for Cade Cunningham, the Pistons’ franchise player.
In his first All-Star season as an NBA player, Duren went nuclear in the regular season after tallying 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and two assists in 70 games.
However, his stat line dipped significantly during the playoffs, as he averaged only 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists from the first round through the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Duren received backlash after underperforming in the postseason, where both the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers exposed his lack of perimeter and 3-point shooting.
In the do-or-die Game 7 against the Cavaliers, the majority expected him to bounce back and perform under the bright lights of their home court, but Duren only logged seven markers, nine boards, and three dimes in 25 minutes of playing time.
To make things worse, Paul Reed, Detroit’s backup center, snatched Duren’s role in the playoffs and played more key stretches, especially against Cleveland in the semis.
Despite the stalled extension talks, the Pistons have made it clear they aim to retain Duren and are focused on reaching an agreement with his camp.
Duren and the Pistons are coming off a historic run, ending a five-year NBA playoff drought while coming back from a 1-3 series deficit in the first round against Orlando.
Although they failed to protect home court in Game 7 against the Cavaliers, the Pistons still ended the 2025-26 season on a high note after capturing their first playoff win in nearly two decades.
