Alvarez dominates Munguia to retain undisputed super-middleweight belts

Canelo Alvarez is still the undisputed king of the 168-lbs. boxing division after outclassing fellow Mexican Jamie Munguia on May 5, 2024, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

After pulling off a lopsided victory over Jermell Charlo several months ago, Alvarez returned inside the boxing ring with a bang and didn’t give any room to breathe on Munguia.

Alvarez scored a unanimous decision victory over Munguia as three of the match judges tallied, 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112, all in favor of the superstar from Guadalajara.

Despite a slow start in the match, Alvarez was able to recover midway through the second round after connecting with his power punch combinations.

Munguia surprised the fans in attendance after showing more work-rate than Alvarez with his busy jabs and sneaky 1-2 combinations.

However, soon as the third round began, Alvarez turned the showdown into a one-sided beating after deciding to hound Munguia with pressure.

All hell then broke loose in the fourth round after Alvarez scored the first and last knockdown of the fight, catching Munguia with a well-timed uppercut that floored the younger Mexican.

With the knockdown he suffered in the fourth round, Munguia started to execute a more conservative approach that turned in favor of Alvarez.

Every time Munguia backpedaled and waited for his jabs, Alvarez came surging in front and punished him with his signature heavy right hand.

Munguia showed some signs of life in the ninth and 10^th rounds after hitting Alvarez with precise combinations but his counter-attack was too late for him to salvage more points.

With the huge victory, Alvarez improved his professional boxing record to 61 wins, 39 knockouts, and two losses while Munguia dropped to 43 wins, 34 knockouts, and a loss.
