Last month, Filipinos — or at least those who reside in Metro Manila — were stunned on the artificial sand placed on Manila Bay. People were bitterly divided on the issue with some saying it is good to attract tourism, while others were saying that it would not resolve the issue of pollution since it’s merely an aesthetic feature.
To be candid, though, several environmental problems still persist to this day in the country even with the artificial white sand beach. In other words, it does not truly solve all the problems concerning the environment and there is more work to be done. As a matter of fact, the water in Manila Bay is still dangerous to swim at due to high levels of coliform.
Therefore, with this in mind, it is timely and appropriate to discuss environmental problems prevailing not only in the Philippines, but in the whole world. More importantly, its consequences to humanity and what we must do to prevent severe repercussions are important points to ponder as well.
On humans being insensitive to the environment
The Philippines is renowned for being rich in natural resources and wonders — pristine beaches, lush forests, rich marine life, and the like. As we can see, there are a lot of landmarks that are filled with flora and fauna in the country. Despite these natural gifts, humans — Filipinos and foreigners alike — have caused destruction to these majestic presents. As a result, human-caused climate change is now a major global concern that must be addressed and mitigated in the near future.
Clearly, biodiversity loss — as a result of environmental degradation and climate change — is occurring around the world especially in resource-rich Philippines. The factors causing this loss would revolve around human activities such as irresponsible mining, excessive deforestation, careless fishing, and even simple acts such as throwing garbage anywhere.
Humans in general, including Filipinos, have become largely irresponsible and careless of nature. Many people would think that their little acts — such as throwing little trash anywhere — wouldn’t affect the environment in a negative manner. However, when these little acts were accumulated after a period of time — say months or years — the mismanaged waste would be too enormous, ultimately affecting the environment. Not to forget, there are billions of people living the world right now. Hence, the current state of the environment as mentioned earlier can be largely blamed on human activities.
As time runs out, humans must be environmentally responsible
In spite of the fact that humans contributed largely to environmental degradation, there is still hope to prevent a grim future. However, we must be urgent — that is to act smartly and act swiftly. To mitigate climate change and alleviate biodiversity loss, we must first know what particular human activities cause these catastrophic occurrences. Second, now that we know what acts result in climate change and biodiversity loss, it is imperative to get rid of such actions. Lastly, it is also important to participate in activities that would raise awareness on environmental issues, contribute to a cleaner environment, and alleviate the depressive state of nature.
Definitely, all of us must be responsible for taking care of the environment. This is especially true for those who appreciate the artificial sand in Manila Bay. It would be hypocritical for them if they would be irresponsible on how they manage their waste. What’s the point of having an aesthetically-pleasing landmark if the people and government alike are irresponsible when it comes to waste management? But regardless of one’s stance on that divisive issue, everyone must genuinely care for the environment.
Altogether, through long-term, sound, and scientific solutions in alleviating climate change, environmental issues can be somehow mitigated. At the same time, people must be responsible for their actions in all places, at all times. Hopefully, climate change and biodiversity loss would not be a severe or serious concern for succeeding generations. To do this, however, it is essential to act now because time is already running out.
