The San Antonio Spurs didn’t waste any time, locking in Victor Wembanyama to a five-year, USD 252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension.
“Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes,” the 22-year-old French franchise superstar posted on his official X account.
According to multiple reports, Spurs Chairman Peter J. Holt, CEO R.C. Buford, General Manager Brian Wright, and head coach Mitch Johnson all flew to Paris to meet with Wembanyama, his family, and his representatives.
Wembanyama was already eligible to sign a USD 303 million maximum extension, but the Spurs’ cornerstone decided on the 25% maximum instead of the 30% supermax.
His decision could save San Antonio USD 50 million over the next five years while also taking a page from Jalen Brunson’s negotiating playbook.
In 2024, the New York Knicks superstar took a massive USD 113 million pay cut, which allowed the franchise to sign veterans in free agency, including Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Aside from bringing in more players who transformed the Knicks into NBA champions, Brunson’s financial sacrifice also helped New York re-sign OG Anunoby, one of its key pieces during its 2026 NBA championship campaign.
With San Antonio having more cap space because of Wembanyama’s deal, the Spurs can add more big names to their roster to boost their bid for a return trip to the NBA Finals.
On July 6, 2026, San Antonio secured the services of seasoned power forward Tobias Harris, who signed a two-year, USD 31 million contract after leaving the Detroit Pistons.
The Spurs also fortified their coaching staff by adding former Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan as their new lead assistant coach.
Donovan officially replaced Sean Sweeney, who accepted the Orlando Magic’s head coaching offer on June 19, 2026.
Wembanyama and the Spurs are coming off an impressive run in the 2026 NBA playoffs, dethroning the Oklahoma City Thunder to end a 12-year NBA Finals drought.
Despite losing to the Knicks in the championship series, San Antonio still ended the year on a high note, rising from the 13th seed in the 2025 season to become a championship contender.
