A new basketball league dedicated to honing the skills of young players is here.
Organized by one of the most prominent basketball coaches in Iloilo City, Albert Nabo, the Coach A 10-under hoops league officially took flight on July 11, 2026, at the Angelicum School Iloilo basketball gym.
“The main reason is to give kids early exposure and let them experience how to handle pressure during games,” said coach Nabo in an exclusive interview with the Daily Guardian.
Unlike other 10-under basketball leagues, the Coach A hoops tourney took a different route, using a ball club drafting system in which the participating teams selected players.
According to coach Nabo and the organizing committee, the drafting system was implemented to create a balanced playing field, with players designated under the A, B, and C categories.
The opening game was an absolute thriller, as Alicia’s Batchoy secured a close win over Bel is Cove, 71-67.
Alicia’s Batchoy was led by Alonzo Chiang, who scored 11 big points, while Rhodelle Mirasol and Vhal Calopez added eight and four points, respectively.
Team Coca-Cola highlighted the second fixture of the opening game day after the squad scored a convincing 54-42 win over Encarnacion Builders and Design.
Ray Exequiel Sorongon was the top scorer on the opening game day, dropping 21 points, while the sibling one-two punch of Inno Rusel Miclat and Inno Miclat Jr. combined for 19 points.
In the final scheduled game, Vilmer Caligan, Deondre Dela Cruz, and Rafael Oñate combined to steer RBJR Construction to a 39-34 win over Guimaras Mountain Resort.
“The league is also to help develop camaraderie and friendship beyond basketball,” added coach Nabo.
“Learn to be tough but humble — not just in basketball, but in life someday. To see the players grow and develop not only in skills, but in CHARACTER!!”
Aside from coach Nabo, former varsity basketball players-turned-mentors Inno Miclat and Paolo Palomata also helped bring the league to life.
Coach A Basketball would like to thank Bel is Cove Beach Resort, Coca-Cola, Guimaras Mountain Resort, RBJR Construction, Alicia’s Batchoy, Encarnacion Builders and Design, Angelicum School Iloilo-UST, and the supportive parents for making the league possible.
