ROXAS CITY, Capiz — After an intense battle over the 64 squares of the chessboard, the veteran chess players outwitted the youth team with a final score of 26.5 to 22.5 points, securing both the championship trophy and a cash prize of PHP 7,000.
In Round 1, the veteran team dominated the youth squad, outscoring them 5.5 to 1.5 points.
The youth made a comeback in Round 2, winning 5 to 2 points.
In Rounds 3 and 4, the young woodpushers rallied with consecutive 4-3 wins, taking the series lead at 14.5 against the veterans’ 13.5.
However, the veterans staged a strong comeback in Round 5, scoring 5 points against the youth’s 2.
In Round 6, the youth team scored 4.5 points while the veterans earned 2.5, tying the match at 21-all.
Heading into the final Round 7, both teams displayed focus, offering prayers and exchanging motivational words.
The pride and determination of each side to win the coveted trophy were evident.
Ultimately, the veterans’ stamina and experience prevailed in the decisive round, scoring 5.5 points to the youth’s 1.5.
The youth finished as runners-up and received a cash prize of PHP 3,500.
Francisco Lamayo Jr. of Mambusao town was the veterans’ top scorer with 6 points, while Engr. Michael Falsis led the youth with 4.5.
Capiz’s first National Master, Francis Jocson, served as arbiter of the Capisnon All-Star Chess Showdown.
