CANDON, Ilocos Sur — Alyssa Valdez is approaching the Volleyball All-Star Showcase with gratitude, knowing opportunities like this have become rarer at this stage of her career.
The 32-year-old volleyball star reflected on the moment at Candon Ecopark, where players took part in a tree-planting activity a day before the much-anticipated showcase.
“Exactly one of the reasons why I think I just want to enjoy this is because I’m not sure if, ‘di ba, first and last natin ‘to,” Valdez said.
Valdez, long regarded as one of the faces of the Premier Volleyball League, said the All-Star event gives her a chance to enjoy the game beyond championships and individual accolades.
Once defined by dominance and star power, Valdez has seen her role evolve as the Creamline Cool Smashers continue to develop a younger core.
Her minutes have become more measured, but her leadership and presence remain important for the league’s most successful club.
In the 2026 All-Filipino Conference, Valdez again showed her value when injuries sidelined key scorers Bernadeth Pons and Jema Galanza.
The veteran stepped up with composure, leadership, and timely contributions that helped steer Creamline to another championship.
As she prepares to suit up for Team Heart in the All-Star Game, Valdez said the experience is no longer about carrying the load.
For her, the showcase is about sharing the court with the next generation of PVL standouts.
Valdez said she is looking forward to teaming up with rising stars Vanie Gandler and Bella Belen, who now inspire younger volleyball fans.
“It’s my first time to play I think with Bella and Vanie… so it’s just so nice na makateammate din syempre ‘yung mga ina-idolize ng mga kabataan ngayon,” she said.
Beyond the spectacle of the All-Star event, Valdez said she also sees the game as an opportunity to learn from younger players.
Even as a decorated veteran, she remains curious about how the league’s emerging stars prepare and approach competition.
“Gusto ko makita… how they actually prepare for a game… feeling ko mai-inspire rin ako na mas maglaro pa,” she added.
The All-Star Showcase also serves as a bridge between generations, bringing together established names and the players shaping the PVL’s future.
Valdez said the gathering reflects the unity of the local volleyball community.
“So ayun… it’s just so nice na lahat naman in the community are friends… na meron tayong chance magsama-sama at mag-enjoy para sa ating volleyball community,” she said.
At this point in her career, Valdez is no longer focused solely on chasing victories.
In Candon, she is savoring the chance to share the court, learn from younger stars, and celebrate the sport that continues to define her journey.
