The back and forth between these two torchbearers just keeps on getting better and better.
First, it was the mighty Spaniard who got it done on clay, then the Italian ace responded on grass.
Two months after meeting twice in a row in a Grand Slam final stage, both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner met again for the third time in the championship match of the 2025 US Open.
Everyone knew what was at stake.
Renewed rivalry, chase for the world No. 1 spot, and a back-to-back title aspiration on the line.
However, Alcaraz not only knew the memo, but he also understood it.
In a jam-packed Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, Alcaraz saved the best for last after dethroning Sinner in the grand finals of the US Open, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, to successfully pull off the bounce- back Grand Slam victory on Sept. 8, 2025.
Alcaraz made sure he quickly moved on from an erratic Wimbledon finals matchup, entering the US Open championship match with a laser-focused mindset.
From an error-plagued serving display on grass, Alcaraz showed retooled service possessions that set the tone for a one-sided opening set performance.
In retrospect, Alcaraz committed seven costly double-fault errors during his four-set loss at Wimbledon. In the hard court at Flushing Meadows, the 22-year-old committed none and bombarded Sinner with 10 service aces.
That’s how you return from adversity.
Everything was just pure for Alcaraz, with every groundstroke gliding like poetry in motion. All those massive forehands left no crumbs, bullying Sinner in the baseline to pile up the freebie baseline points.
Midway through the first set, Sinner left the crowd breathless after scoring insane net points from awkward setups that turned garbage into gold.
When Sinner thought that the down-the-line was always cash, Alcaraz came prepared and answered swinging with an anticipated defensive stroke that fell into the opposite side of the court for more points.
However, it wasn’t an expected walk in the park as Sinner came alive in the second set, taking advantage of a golden service break that allowed him to inch close and level the contest at 1-all.
When everyone got worried when flashes of the 2025 Wimbledon match appeared, Alcaraz marched to the center court unfazed and picked up where he left off to turn the tables around.
Alcaraz stuck to his strategy and leaned on a great serving start to kick off things on a high note, backstopped by a much-improved decision-making whether to attack early in the net or stay on the baseline.
All those moves paid off dividends, as Alcaraz won the majority of the 50-50 rallies, including another risky serve-and-volley that propelled him to a set point.
Holding a 2-1 advantage, Alcaraz never gave Sinner additional room to breathe and pounced on him to avoid any five-set drama.
As the match progressed, the umpire’s voice came to a point where he only announced the name “Alcaraz” for every point taken.
Alcaraz then sealed the deal with a booming service that Sinner failed to return, wrapping up his trip to the US with another Grand Slam golden trophy.
With the win in New York, Alcaraz now has his sixth Grand Slam title, including two in the US Open, where he won his first way back in 2022.
“My team, my family, I am really lucky to have you guys, to be honest,” Alcaraz said during the trophy presentation.
“The hard work you do to make me even better, not only in the professional part, but the personal part as well. Every achievement that I am making is thanks to you, and this one is no less, it’s also yours.”
