A safer and more comfortable travel experience now awaits motorists heading to Iloilo International Airport via Leganes-Santa Barbara Road, thanks to the asphalt overlay by the Department of Public Works and Highways.
The PHP83.789-million project, implemented by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office under its fiscal year 2024 Regular Infrastructure Program, covers asphalt overlaying of a 4.8-kilometer, two-lane road.
The project also includes the installation of thermoplastic pavement markings to enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians, and local residents.
Citing a report from District Engineer Mario G. Soriano, Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel said the road upgrade improves transportation access and supports efficient delivery of government services.
He added that the improved road benefits all types of road users and boosts the transport of goods from farms to markets.

“This road network provides alternate access to the Iloilo International Airport, decongesting major routes and reducing travel time,” Oropel said.
The route also passes through several local communities and vast agricultural areas, making daily travel easier for residents.
It also enables cost-efficient transport of agricultural goods to commercial centers and town proper.
Soriano emphasized that using asphalt provides long-term benefits for the government and the public, including reduced maintenance costs.
He noted that the use of reflectorized thermoplastic markings improves road safety, especially at night, by guiding motorists and warning pedestrians.
“This road improvement will significantly extend the life of the existing concrete pavement without requiring full repaving,” Soriano said.
He added that asphalt offers a smoother and more visually appealing surface than patching or sealing.
The overlay also helps reduce noise pollution and is more cost-efficient.
Upgrading from concrete to asphalt enhances mobility, ensures faster delivery of goods and services, and stimulates economic activity in the region. (DPWH)
