The Digital Innovation Center (DIC) of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) has initiated the deployment and test-run of a local area network with a fiber backbone and structured cabling at the Miagao campus.
The project, part of UPV’s priority initiatives, was approved by the UP Board of Regents on February 24, 2022, and funded by the UP System Administration.
The Php 39.7 million project began on March 12, 2024, and is nearing completion. It aims to connect newly constructed buildings and rehabilitate the existing network infrastructure, initially installed between 1999 and 2000.
The updated network framework includes underground fiber optic cabling, which is less prone to damage from harsh weather and wildlife compared to aerial setups.
The project is expected to facilitate future upgrades, enhance accessibility for equipment management, and improve data flow and internet connectivity across the campus.
DIC spearheaded the initiative under the leadership of Assistant Professor Rhea J. Subong-Espina.

It was endorsed by Assistant Professor John Lorenz Belanio, formerly with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration, and Chancellor Clement C. Camposano, leading to the project’s approval and funding by the UP System Administration.
