BACOLOD City – Two persons, including a criminology student, died in separate road accidents here and in Negros Occidental on Friday and Saturday.
In Bacolod, a graduating criminology student died after she fell from a tricycle and was run over by a minivan in front of a gasoline station at Burgos extension, Barangay Estefania here last Friday.
Police identified the victim as Ayessa Abellar, 22, of Barangay Granada here.
Captain Peter John Ramos, head of Police Station 4, said the victim was sitting at the back of the tricycle driver on her way home when she reportedly dozed off and fell from the tricycle.
Ramos said the driver of a minivan, who allegedly ran over the victim, probably failed to notice her as the area is not well-lighted.
Ramos said the minivan driver surrendered to the police yesterday afternoon, two days after the accident happened, due to fear.
Ramos said the two drivers were released from police custody yesterday after the lapse of the 18-hour reglementary detention, as the victim’s family has yet to decide whether to press charges against them or not.
Meanwhile, in Binalbagan town, Renzyl Italia, 33, of Barangay Aguisan, Himamaylan City, also died after he fell from his motorcycle and was believed run over by an unidentified vehicle in Barangay San Vicente last Saturday.
Police Major Randy Babor, town police chief, said that they could not determine what really happened as there was no witness and the closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage is not clear.
Babor said that based on the assessment of the traffic investigator, there’s a possibility that the victim was thrown off the motorcycle when it slipped on the road.
Investigation is ongoing to determine if the accident was self-inflicted or if there’s a vehicle involved, he added.
