Trademarks play a crucial role in the growth and competitiveness of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), according to Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Fred Pascual.
Speaking at the first Philippine Trademark Conference 2024 on July 24, Pascual highlighted how trademarks serve as essential assets for businesses aiming to expand both locally and internationally.
“Trademarks are more than just symbols of brand identity. They represent the integrity, quality, and reputation of businesses. In today’s globalized economy, trademarks are vital for companies to distinguish their products and services, build consumer trust, and foster brand loyalty. They are instrumental in enabling businesses to compete effectively in both local and international markets,” Pascual stated.
The conference, hosted by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), aimed to educate and assist MSMEs in registering their trademarks and protecting their brands.
The event aligns with the DTI’s broader strategy to empower MSMEs—the backbone of the Philippine economy—through robust intellectual property (IP) protection.
Secretary Pascual emphasized that strong IP protection can level the playing field, allowing MSMEs to compete with established brands. “This competitive environment can foster growth, stimulate innovation, and drive job creation across various industries,” he added.
In line with its “ANGAT Negosyo” goal, the DTI is promoting trademark registration and brand protection to enhance MSME competitiveness and innovation.
The effort is supported by the “Tatak Pinoy” initiative, which focuses on high-quality Filipino products and services to drive industrialization and create well-paying jobs.
The DTI, in collaboration with IPOPHL, is expanding its IP services to help MSMEs register trademarks internationally, which is part of the Philippine Export Development Plan (PEDP) 2023-2028, which aims to position the Philippines as a leading exporter of high-value products and services.
“As Filipino businesses increasingly reach global markets, it is essential that their intellectual property strategy is robust and well-integrated into their growth plans. This approach aligns with the Philippine Export Development Plan,” Pascual noted.
“By investing in intellectual property protection, we are securing our nation’s future—a future where our Philippine businesses are not just participants in the global market but leaders shaping its trajectory.”
The conference underscored the importance of trademarks in driving MSME growth and underscored the DTI’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for businesses to thrive.
