Business leader Teresita “Tessie” Sy-Coson was named Honorary Mayor and Adopted Daughter of Iloilo City on June 5 during a ceremony at Iloilo City Hall, in recognition of her contributions to economic growth and humanitarian initiatives.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas formalized the honors through Executive Order No. 042 (s. 2025), granting the honorary mayorship, and Executive Order No. 114 (s. 2024), declaring her an adopted daughter of the city.
Sy-Coson, vice chairperson of SM Investments Corp. and chair of BDO Unibank Inc., was recognized for her role in modernizing Iloilo’s public markets, strengthening community resilience, and supporting livelihood and financial literacy programs for vendors.
The redevelopment of two major markets was completed through a public-private partnership with SM Prime Holdings.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she also led relief efforts that included donations of vaccines, test kits, and personal protective equipment to hospitals and communities in Iloilo.
In 2023, the SM Foundation upgraded the pediatric ward of the West Visayas State University Medical Center, including its neonatal intensive care unit and other essential facilities.
Mayor Treñas said Sy-Coson’s efforts have elevated Iloilo’s status as a regional investment hub.
He cited ongoing projects such as the SMX Convention Center and National University Iloilo, which are expected to stimulate further economic activity.
“Iloilo’s transformation is a testament to the unwavering trust, dedication, and confidence of those who have walked alongside the city—investing in its growth, shaping its future, and nurturing a community that reflects their aspirations and hard work. Today, we are honored to recognize one such individual,” Treñas said.
SM Group’s presence in Iloilo began in the 1970s with the opening of its first store on Delgado Street.
Sy-Coson expressed her gratitude and reaffirmed her support for Iloilo’s development.
“Iloilo has grown through the years. I’ve been here almost 50 years, and I’ve seen a big difference,” she said.
“In terms of business establishment, we will be expanding still, and through our foundations and community work, we will remain actively involved—having also adopted Iloilo as one of our main cities. We will grow together—whether in business or in the community, we will be here,” she added.
Sy-Coson is the second individual to be named Honorary Mayor of Iloilo City, following philanthropist and businesswoman Fanny Uy.
