STUTTGART, Germany — Two-time Stuttgart Open champion Iga Swiatek advanced to the quarterfinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix after beating Germany’s Laura Siegemund, 6-2, 6-3, on Wednesday.
The match marked Swiatek’s first with new clay-court coach Francisco Roig, as the former world No. 1 began her Stuttgart campaign with a straight-sets win.
Swiatek, the tournament’s No. 3 seed and a six-time Grand Slam champion, failed to convert an early break in the opening set but recovered by breaking Siegemund in the sixth and eighth games to take control.
In the second set, Swiatek again missed an early break chance but broke Siegemund in the eighth game to move ahead 5-3 before serving out the match.
The Polish star had received a first-round bye and moved directly into the quarterfinals with the victory.
Elsewhere in Stuttgart, qualifier Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey delivered one of the day’s biggest surprises by defeating fifth-seeded Jasmine Paolini of Italy, 6-2, 6-2, in one hour and 16 minutes.
Sonmez landed 72% of her first serves and won 62.5% of second-return points in the upset.
Paolini failed to convert her lone break-point chance and won just 41.8% of total points in the match.
Fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine was also among the winners after routing Germany’s Eva Lys, 6-1, 6-0.
Sixth-seeded Mirra Andreeva of Russia ousted defending champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
American qualifier Alycia Parks defeated German wild card Noma Noha Akugue, 6-4, 6-2.
Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic also advanced after outlasting China’s Zhang Shuai, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
At the Rouen Metropolitan Open in France, unseeded Katie Boulter of Great Britain upset No. 3 seed Jaqueline Cristian of Romania, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals.
Boulter, who the release said has won just once on the WTA Tour, survived a tense first set after leading 5-0 in the tiebreak before Cristian saved five set points.
Cristian came back to claim the second set, but Boulter controlled the decider and broke twice on her way to the win.
Top-seeded Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine also reached the Rouen quarterfinals after rallying past unseeded American Caty McNally, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Kostyuk will next face fifth-seeded American Ann Li, who beat Kamilla Rakhimova of Uzbekistan, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Unseeded Tatjana Maria of Germany upset No. 9 seed Elsa Jacquemot of France, 6-4, 6-3.
Other Rouen winners included No. 2 seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania, Anna Bondar of Hungary, and Oleksandra Oliynykova of Ukraine.
