League-leading Cignal sets out to further solidify its grip on the lead as it faces an Akari side eager to fuel its own late surge in the race to the semifinals of the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference at the FilOil Playtime Centre today (Saturday).
Halfway through the single-round preliminaries featuring 10 teams, the Super Spikers sit at 4-1 — a slim lead that reflects just how volatile and tightly packed the chase for the Final Four has become. PLDT and Creamline trail closely at 3-1, while Nxled, despite back-to-back losses, remains within striking distance at 3-2.
The middle of the pack is just as congested. Capital1 Solar Spikers stands at 3-3, while Farm Fresh, Galeries Tower and Choco Mucho hover dangerously close at 2-3.
Meanwhile, Akari is lodged at ninth with a 1-3 card, just ahead of ZUS Coffee (1-4). But the Chargers’ recent four-set win over the Chameleons has revived their semifinal aspirations and served notice that no contender can afford to relax.
Despite absorbing a shutout defeat to Nxled that snapped its opening three-game streak, Cignal responded the way elite teams do — with authority. Its emphatic victory over erstwhile unbeaten PLDT reaffirmed not only the Super Spikers’ depth but also their mental toughness.
Cignal’s biggest edge lies in its cohesion and system discipline. While many teams rely heavily on star power, the Super Spikers thrive on speed, seamless ball distribution and collective defense. Still, their attack remains anchored on the explosive pairing of Erika Santos and Vanie Gandler, whose combined 31-point eruption dismantled the High Speed Hitters.
When Gandler was limited to just five points in the loss to Nxled, the offense sputtered — exposing a vulnerability. But that stumble also underscored a key strength — Cignal’s ability to recalibrate quickly. With Roselyn Aquino, Ishie Lalongisip, Jackie Acuña and playmaker Gel Cayuna providing stability, the Super Spikers enter the 4 p.m. clash as the more balanced and battle-tested side.
“Siguro ano muna, pag-aaralan muna namin. But syempre, yun nga, bigyan namin ng… syempre ito, mga beterano din players nila and may matindi rin silang coaching staff. So, I think, pag-aaralan namin silang mabuti dun sa 3 days na natitira namin and magre-recover din ng maganda,” said Cignal head coach Shaq delos Santos.
Yet in a conference where momentum swings wildly from match to match, pedigree guarantees nothing.
The Chargers, guided by coach Tina Salak, are drawing confidence from their improved rhythm. Ivy Lacsina, Grethcel Soltones, Fifi Sharma, Ced Domingo and Eli Soyud will need to deliver another collective surge, while Mars Alba’s orchestration could dictate whether Akari can extend its revival.
“Actually, malaking bagay tong win na to after a very bad start. Malaking bagay to samin. To continue yung ano namin, yung goal namin, siyempre mas… kung ano yung performance namin ngayon, magkakaroon pa ng, double time kami sa… kailangan namin humabol, e,” Salak said.
Given the tournament’s pattern of upsets and five-set thrillers, Cignal will be wary of overlooking a desperate squad with practically nothing to lose.
In the 6:30 p.m. main game, PLDT seeks to bounce back against cellar-dwelling ZUS Coffee.
On paper, the High Speed Hitters hold a significant advantage. Their deep rotation — bannered by Savi Davison, Kim Dy, Majoy Baron, Mika Reyes, Alleiah Malaluan and Jovie Prado — gives them one of the most formidable arsenals in the league. Their blend of size, power and experience makes them overwhelming favorites against a Thunderbelles side that has dropped four of its first five games.
But if this conference has proven anything, it is that reputations evaporate once the first serve is struck.
ZUS Coffee, desperate to climb out of the cellar, will lean on Chinnie Arroyo, Riza Nogales, Thea Gagate, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Kate Santiago, Renee Peñafiel and setter Cloanne Mondonedo for what would require a massive upset.
Halfway through the prelims, the separation between contender and chaser remains razor-thin. Early streaks have been halted. Favorites have stumbled. Underdogs have risen.
For Cignal and PLDT, the edge lies in depth, structure and proven firepower. But as the race to the Final Four intensifies, the conference’s prevailing theme remains clear:
No lead is safe. No opponent is easy. And no outcome is guaranteed.
