Stephan Schrock looks to help future PHL football plans after retirement

Philippine Azkals pioneer Stephan Schrock is now officially retired from the men’s national football team but the desire to help shape the country’s program remained one of his priorities.

The national team’s disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Indonesia in the AFF Championship Cup marked Schrock’s last game wearing the Azkals uniform, a thing he announced several days ago in the middle of the tournament.

During his most recent press conference, Schrock reiterated that he might be absent in the remaining games for the Azkals but he is planning to help the team in any way that he can.

“I’d love to stay. I know it’s difficult, I know it’s not the easiest job, Azkals head coach Josep Ferré would tell you more about that, but I’d love to be involved,” said Schrock.

Since last year, the national team leader is already playing a major role in helping the young stars after accepting a stint with the Azkals Development Team (ADT) joining in the Philippines Football League (PFL).

Schrock served as the team’s leader until the latest PFL conference but is still unsure whether he will have his one last dance in the PHL’s professional football league.

“I haven’t made up my mind yet. It depends on the outcomes of the talks I would have in the next couple of days,” added Schrock.

Schrock took PHL football by storm when he first reported for duty 11 years ago when the country was still starting to build its identity in the Southeast Asian competition.

After 56 national team appearances, the former Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder tallied a total of six goals and 10 assists.

As of now, Schrock will look to spend his time with his family but vowed to keep in touch with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).

“We have a bright future with the young ones. They are very, very promising players. I wish them all the best. I hope I can help them in any way. If ever someone has a question, I’ll reach out anytime and I’ll be there for them,” said the Azkals veteran.
