Aiming to provide a more conducive venue for sports and other community activities in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is renovating the town’s municipal multi-purpose gym.
Undertaken by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office, in coordination with the local government unit, the PHP14.7-million project is funded under the FY 2025 Basic Infrastructure Program.
The renovation involves the rehabilitation of the existing multi-purpose building, including the replacement of roofing and windows, installation of wood tiles for the basketball court flooring, and simulated bricks on the building’s front facade.
The project also includes repainting of walls, provision of ceiling, electrical and plumbing works, and construction of comfort rooms on both sides of the stage.
According to District Engineer Mario G. Soriano, who reported to Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel, the renovation reflects the Department’s commitment to creating a safe, versatile space for sports, recreation, and community gatherings.

“When completed, the improved gym will not only serve as a hub for physical education classes and sporting events but will also function as a vital community gathering space,” Soriano said.
“This renovated gym is expected to foster a stronger sense of community by offering more opportunities for engagement through sports and community programs, ensuring the safety and wellness of its users,” he added.
Meanwhile, RD Oropel said the upgraded covered gym may also be used as a temporary evacuation center during calamities, disasters, or emergency situations.
“During untoward circumstances like typhoons, fire, or other calamities, this building may serve as an evacuation center, providing evacuees with a bigger, more ventilated, and spacious temporary shelter,” Oropel explained.
Oropel also noted that the improved gym can host health and medical missions, educational activities, religious events, and other programs that benefit the town’s residents.
The renovation is currently ongoing and is expected to be completed by August this year.
This improvement represents more than just an upgrade in facilities—it signifies the Department’s commitment to fostering healthier lifestyles through safe, reliable, and resilient infrastructure that supports a more comfortable life for Filipinos. (DPWH)
