To ensure uninterrupted travel to upland communities and tourist destinations in Leon and Alimodian, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is continuing slope protection projects along the Bancal-Leon-Antique Boundary Road.
The DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office recently completed additional slope protection along this key road section, particularly in Barangay Buga, Leon, Iloilo.
The PHP33.316-million project, funded under the 2024 DPWH Regular Infrastructure Program, involved the construction of a 40-meter slope protection structure with safety guardrails for motorists.
This project adds to previous slope protection works along this vital route leading to agri-tourism sites in Alimodian’s “Seven Cities” and the Bucari Eco-Park in Leon.
Earlier this year, a 57-meter-long, 6-meter-high road slope protection on a sheet pile foundation was completed in Barangay Tagsing.
Also in 2024, a 115-lineal-meter slope protection structure worth PHP98.999 million was constructed in Barangay Manasa, Alimodian.
That project included an erosion control mat, active wire mesh, permanent ground anchors, and hydroseeding.
Another 122-lineal-meter slope protection structure, costing PHP98.994 million, was also built in Barangay Manasa, with similar slope stabilization measures plus a reinforced concrete retaining wall and a drainage system.
In his report to Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel, District Engineer Mario G. Soriano said the latest slope protection ensures road stability and supports the movement of people and transport of farm goods to markets.
“With this improved road access, travel to far-flung barangays in Leon and Alimodian is safer, more convenient, and cost-efficient, benefiting local farmers and agricultural producers,” Soriano said.
He added that the rehabilitated road guarantees all-weather access, even during heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, RD Oropel noted that improved roads with slope protection structures will help boost tourism in central Iloilo by providing better access to attractions like Bucari Pine Ridge and Imoy Falls.
“With these slope protection structures, we can ensure safer travel for both local and foreign tourists visiting the highlands of Leon and Alimodian,” he said.
He added that the road also leads to vast agricultural lands, and its improvement greatly benefits farmers, crop producers, and livestock raisers.
Better road conditions support local economic growth, ensure safer transportation, and provide communities easier access to essential services and livelihood opportunities. (DPWH)
