BACOLOD CITY — A 45-year-old policeman who was killed by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Calatrava, Negros Occidental, last week was laid to rest in his hometown of Toboso on Saturday, December 13.
Personnel from the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) rendered a solemn 21-gun salute to Police Senior Master Sgt. (PSMS) Rommel Aguilar, a member of the 1st Negros Occidental Provincial Mobile Force Company (NOCPMFC).
“Though he may have left our ranks, his legacy of commitment, honor, and service will forever remain in the hearts of the PNP community and the nation he faithfully served,” the Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) stated.
His family and colleagues paid tribute to his years of selfless service, courage, and sacrifice.
“Today, we gather with heavy hearts to honor and remember PSMS Rommel Aguilar, a dedicated public servant, a loyal colleague, and a true hero in uniform,” the regional office said.
Police Col. Dennis Wenceslao, NOCPPO director, and Police Lt. Col. Lito Patay, deputy regional director for operations of PRO-NIR, attended the necrological service to stand in solidarity with Aguilar’s family and loved ones.
“Your dedication will never be forgotten, and your sacrifice will always be honored,” they said.
Aguilar was found dead in Barangay Laga-an, Calatrava, a few hours after he went missing following a brief firefight with unidentified armed men in Barangay Menchaca during a police operation against a wanted person on December 7.
Before the discovery of Aguilar’s body, a 59-year-old civilian—allegedly tagged by New People’s Army rebels as a military asset—was gunned down in Barangay Dolis, also in Calatrava.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into both incidents as they work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
