BACOLOD CITY – The Kansilay Dancesport Team (KDST) from Silay City, Negros Occidental, has made a triumphant mark on the international stage, dominating two prestigious dancesport competitions in Malaysia this month.
More than just showcasing their talent, the team danced with purpose—raising funds and awareness for children with special needs.
Under the guidance of head coach Philip Lui Deocadiz, the team delivered exceptional performances at the Open World Penang Dancesport Championship held on Aug. 2–3, and the Negeri Sembilan International Dancesport Championship on Aug. 9. Both events brought together top dancers from across Asia and beyond, blending world-class skill, athleticism, and artistry.
This year’s Penang championship—organized by Miss Annie Oo and supported by the Penang state government—had a special cause: proceeds were directed toward programs for children with special needs.
Alessandrea Pescasiosa won triple gold in the Under-10 Latin category, while Chiska Rhian Agudon claimed two golds, one silver, and one bronze in the Under-12 Latin category. Mikaela Jane Aguilar earned one gold, one silver, and one bronze in the same category. Sheiney Czarine Duran brought home one silver and one bronze in the Under-12 Latin category.
Thirty-two-year-old Deocadiz noted that this noble purpose gave the team’s participation even greater significance. “We are not aiming for the money. We are proud that we were able to show our talent internationally and help those in need,” he said.
The team’s journey to Penang was filled with unexpected challenges that tested their patience and determination. Just hours before their July 31 departure, one dancer nearly missed the trip due to a passport delay caused by a recent typhoon.
Meanwhile, the team received their long-awaited city budget support on the morning of their flight—a moment Deocadiz described as perfectly timed.
Despite last-minute stress and logistical hurdles, everything aligned. Immigration processes went smoothly, flights were manageable despite delays, and the team arrived prepared and motivated, according to Deocadiz.
“These moments reminded us that resilience and faith are powerful forces that continue to fuel Filipino athletes,” Deocadiz shared.
In the Negeri Sembilan International Dancesport Championship 2025, winners included Chiska Rhian Agudon and Miakela Joyce Agudon, who won double gold in the Synchronized Latin Under-12 category; Shang Carlo Alapa and Kianne Gee Roxas, who took silver and bronze in the Novice I and Novice II Latin categories; and Michael Angelo and Steph Sabalo Marquez, who earned bronze medals in the Professional Open Latin category.
At the Penang event, Deocadiz not only coached his team but also served as a respected member of the International Panel of Adjudicators, solidifying his standing in the global dance community.
He continues to mentor the next generation of dancesport athletes, bringing pride to Silay City and the entire country. His journey from competitive champion to mentor reflects a deep commitment to the growth of dancesport in the Philippines.
Deocadiz, a former national and international champion himself, said that KDST’s success from Penang to Negeri Sembilan is a reflection of their unwavering discipline, passion, and dedication.
“KDST’s achievement is more than a win—it’s a shared triumph of young athletes, dedicated coaches, supportive families, and a proud community,” he said.
Representing Silay City and the Philippines, the team proved that with hard work, heart, and perseverance, anything is possible, he said.
