They’ve crossed paths at the business end of tournaments more than once, and if current form is any indication, Keanu Jahns and Rupert Zaragosa could once again find themselves battling for supremacy on the tight, demanding fairways of Del Monte Golf Club.
The PHP 3.5 million ICTSI Del Monte Championship gets going Tuesday (Oct. 14), ushering in a high-stakes three-tournament stretch to cap the Philippine Golf Tour season, and while the stakes are shared, the paths to the top are anything but similar for Jahns and Zaragosa, two of the tour’s most consistent forces this year.
Jahns, known for his versatility and power, thrives on courses that allow him to unleash his long game yet has shown an impressive ability to adapt when precision is required.
His consecutive wins at Caliraya Springs and the Bacolod Challenge highlighted his all-around game and strategic acumen, and on more open layouts his confidence off the tee gives him a significant edge—especially when his iron play follows suit.
Zaragosa, on the other hand, is the embodiment of precision and discipline, having halted Jahns’ win streak at Negros Occidental with a masterclass in consistency and course management—attributes that align with Del Monte’s layout, which punishes aggression and rewards patient, calculated play.
While Jahns brings the firepower, Zaragosa counters with finesse as their rivalry shapes into one of the tour’s most compelling narratives with ranking points, prize money, and postseason berths on the line.
Del Monte isn’t built for heroics and demands restraint, shot planning, and pinpoint execution, and though there are holes where power offers an advantage, ball control, placement, and mental resilience ultimately separate contenders from the rest.
That sets the stage for a field-wide battle in which not just Jahns and Zaragosa, but also veterans and rising stars like Tony Lascuña, Jhonnel Ababa, Ira Alido, Zanieboy Gialon, Ryan Monsalve, and Russell Bautista will need to elevate their games, because mistakes will be magnified and every misjudged approach or missed fairway could spell the difference between contention and obscurity.
Others tipped to contend are Guido van der Valk, Michael Bibat, Nilo Salahog, Fidel Concepcion, Dino Villanueva, John Michael Uy, and foreign bidders Collin Wheeler, Kim Tae Soo, Jisung Cheon, and Kim Tae Won.
Beyond the trophy and the lion’s share of the PHP 3.5 million purse, the Del Monte event serves as a launchpad into the Mindanao swing—two more events at Apo and South Pacific—that could define the season for Order of Merit hopefuls and TCC Invitational aspirants.
The top 30 players at the end of the 10-leg circuit will qualify for the season-capping Match Play Championship in November and the prestigious TCC Invitational early next year.
With that on the line, every round, every hole, and every shot at Del Monte carries weight.
Daniella Uy returns to familiar territory this week hoping to rekindle the form that brought her a two-shot triumph at the ICTSI Del Monte Championship two years ago.
With course familiarity and a championship pedigree on her side, the Taiwan tour campaigner is not just looking to score a repeat beginning Tuesday (Oct. 14) but is determined to redeem herself from a disappointing finish in the last leg of the Ladies Philippine Golf Tour.
Coming off a strong third-place finish in Bacolod, Uy entered the Negros Occidental stop with momentum before a jittery opening-round 74 stalled her push, and although she recovered with a 70 in Round 2, another 74 in the final round left her sixth.
Now back at Del Monte, where her precision and poise earned the top prize in 2023, Uy aims to rediscover her best form against a formidable field packed with proven winners and in-form challengers.
Leading that charge is Florence Bisera, who has emerged as one of the hottest players on tour after a come-from-behind victory at Marapara and a breakthrough win at the Thai LPGA Masters last month, making the Davaoeña ace the biggest threat to Uy’s repeat bid.
Adding to the intensity are Mafy Singson and Chanelle Avaricio—both former LPGT leg champions hungry to bounce back from subpar showings in Negros—whose experience, firepower, and hunger for redemption all but guarantee a tightly contested battle at the mountaintop layout.
The PHP 1 million event organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. also features Mindanao-based talents Martina Miñoza, Velinda Castil, Pamela Mariano, and amateur standout Zero Plete, who aim to cash in on local knowledge of Del Monte’s elevation changes and tight fairways.
The 54-hole test of shot-making and mental resilience also kicks off a three-tournament Mindanao swing with Order of Merit points up for grabs as frontrunners seek to strengthen positions ahead of the season-ending Match Play Championship next month at The Country Club.
Following Del Monte, the tour heads to the Apo Golf Classic in Davao from Oct. 21–24, then to South Pacific Golf and Residential Estates from Oct. 28–31 for the final leg of the swing.
Also in the title hunt are former leg winners Sarah Ababa, Chihiro Ikeda, and Harmie Constantino, all looking to rebound from recent lackluster performances.
Marvi Monsalve returns to LPGT action seeking to make her comeback count with a strong showing.
Tiffany Lee, still searching for the form she flashed during a promising pro debut at Splendido Taal last year, will try to end inconsistent results with a breakthrough, while dark horses Kayla Nocum, Angela Mangana, Leslie Icoy, Rev Alcantara, Gretchen Villacencio, Apple Fudolin, Kristine Fleetwood, Korean hopeful Eunhua Nam, and veteran Eva Miñoza round out a deep field.
For Uy, the mission is clear: tap her winning formula at Del Monte, block out distractions, and rise above one of the strongest fields of the season as all eyes watch whether she can summon the composure and consistency that once made her queen of this course.
