A seafarer died in an accident during a bike ride in Leon, Iloilo afternoon of February 6, 2021.
Police identified the fatality as Earl Cabasan, 25, of Barangay Parara, Tigbauan, Iloilo.
Lieutenant Sammy Gasataya, Leon police officer-in-charge, said Cabasan joined some friends on a bike ride to Barangay Bucari, a village situated in the highlands of Leon.
By noontime, Cabasan allegedly told his friend that he would go home ahead of them.
At around 2:10PM, a resident of Barangay Mali-ao found the wounded Cabasan writhing in pain in a shallow ditch.
Cabasan was taken to Aleosan District Hospital in Alimodian town where he was declared dead at 3:30PM.
Gasataya theorized that the victim may have met an accident while navigating a downhill portion of the road.
“He could have abruptly applied brake. But since he’s a heavy-built man, he lost control of the bicycle before ramming into a road signage,” Gasataya said.
He then plunged into a one-meter vegetated ditch, where he was later found.
Gasataya said the portion of Barangay Mali-ao where Cabasan was found is considered an accident-prone area.
