Schoeman targets second IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu crown

Olympic bronze medalist Henri Schoeman will return to the IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu presented by Megaworld on Aug. 9 determined to prove that his breakthrough victory two years ago was no fluke, as he takes on what organizers describe as the strongest international professional field assembled for the country’s premier middle-distance triathlon.

Schoeman’s return adds another compelling chapter to a race that has become one of Asia’s marquee triathlon events. Beyond crowning elite champions, the competition promotes the Philippines as a sports tourism destination while giving Filipino athletes an opportunity to test themselves against some of the world’s best on a world-class course.

The 34-year-old South African made an unforgettable debut in the event in 2024, leading from start to finish to capture the title in four hours, two minutes and 31 seconds. He completed the grueling 1.9-kilometer swim, 90-kilometer bike ride, and 21-kilometer run ahead of New Zealand’s Sam Osborne, who clocked 4:06:40, and Britain’s Tom Bishop, who finished third in 4:11:01.

The victory was particularly significant because it came in Schoeman’s first race over the IRONMAN 70.3 distance. Although the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic bronze medalist has since competed in several middle-distance races worldwide, including the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship and Challenge Samarkand, his triumph in Lapu-Lapu remains his lone IRONMAN 70.3 title and the race that launched his transition to long-course triathlon.

Defending the crown, however, will be far from easy as an accomplished international field is eager to dethrone the former champion in the marquee race organized by Sunrise Events Inc.

Austria’s Sebastian Fuchs headlines the challengers after finishing third at IRONMAN 70.3 Spain in 2023 and emerging as one of Europe’s promising young professionals. The 24-year-old is expected to provide one of the stiffest tests for Schoeman.

New Zealand’s Brett Clifford also enters the race with strong momentum after collecting a silver medal and multiple bronze-medal finishes in half-IRONMAN events this season, including races in South Korea and Taiwan.

Japan’s Kenshin Mizushima brings an equally impressive résumé, having won multiple elite overall championships in IRONMAN 70.3 competitions and regional triathlon circuits.

Also expected to contend are China’s Mial Hao, Singapore’s Aaron Kiss, Australia’s John Fothergill, and American Thomas Iñigo, along with a host of accomplished professionals seeking one of the most coveted titles on the Asian racing calendar.

The event will also feature athletes from around the world competing across numerous age-group divisions, including the Filipino Elite category, making the race another showcase of endurance sports in the country.

Participants will once again tackle the championship course featuring the iconic Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway, whose sweeping views and demanding layout have become one of the signature attractions of IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu. Combined with Cebu’s scenic coastline and punishing tropical heat and humidity, the venue continues to rank among the sport’s most memorable and challenging destinations.
