Sagay students get educational aid from Taiwanese university

Selected students from an island-community in Sagay City received a funding from a university in Taiwan to pursue their education, in a cultural exchange encounter conducted recently.

Students from Fu Jen University in Xinzhuang, New Taipei City, Taiwan, turned-over about P120,000 worth of education funding for the 10 selected students in Suyac Island, Brgy. Taba-ao, Sagay during their cultural exchange encounter on Aug. 22.

The Taiwanese students, who are mostly in senior high school and college levels, visited Sagay for their Career Related International Exposure Program. Their delegation was led by Professor Paul Tseng with their local counterpart, Venus Villarosa of St. John’s Institute in Bacolod City under its Service-Learning Program.

This is the second year that Fu Jen students went to Sagay to support the education of some students from Suyac Island in elementary, high school, and college. They have already supported 10 students since last year.

The turn-over of education funding was done at the Suyac Island Elementary School during the short program organized by the Fu Jen students. They also visited the homes of the beneficiaries and interacted with the Suyac community.

To ensure that the funding will be used for its purpose, it was deposited at the Sinigayan Foundation account and managed by the City Budget Officer Eduardo Marquez.

On Aug. 9, the Fu Jen group held the ‘PintaBalay’ activity, and interacted with the students and teachers of Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology, and met with Mayor Alfredo Marañon III for a courtesy call.

Marañon said that he is grateful with the continued partnership of the City Government and the group from Fu Jen and he hopes that through this education aid, more students will be motivated to go to school.

Pinta Balay is a continuing program of the City Government and the local artists where individuals are helping in painting the house located along the road going to the Margaha Beach of Purok Bougainvillea, Brgy. Old. Sagay.

NONESCOST President Romulo Sisno welcomed the guest in their new College of Business and Management Campus at the government center area in Brgy. Rizal, together with Dean RitchelleAlob and some students.

Sisno said in a message that this encounter is an opportunity for the Taiwanese and Sagaynon students to learn more about each other’s culture.

Villarosa also said that this immersion with the community is very important so that the students will learn by heart the needs of the beneficiary community and can aptly respond to their needs.
