THE Rotary Club of Iloilo led by President Gerald Jones “Dhudz” Berondo celebrated World Polio Day in a simple but meaningful manner on October 24, 2019.
The day started with a motorcade around Iloilo City to drum up support and awareness to polio which recently resurfaced 19 years after it was eradicated with the help of Rotary International.
After the motorcade, a program was held at SM City’s Northwing extension. Two guest speakers from the medical field – Dr. Tomas Saiton, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist; and Dr. Jane Juanico, DOH of Child Health Team Leader – delivered talks on the background of polio and how it can be prevented via vaccination.
A ceremonial administration of oral polio vaccines capped the event to show to the public that vaccination is safe, contrary to unfounded reports.
The event was chaired by Past President Manuel “Manny” Posecion.
