Research pioneer John Creswell headlines UST mixed methods fair

MANILA — Mixed methods research pioneer and leading research methods author Dr. John W. Creswell will headline the third Filipino Mixed Methods Fair at the University of Santo Tomas this month.
Creswell will attend “Halo-Halo 3: The Filipino Mixed Methods Fair” on Oct. 14 and 15 at UST in Manila.
Creswell was the founding president of the Mixed Methods International Research Association (MMIRA) in 2014 and has spent decades promoting mixed methods research through books, teaching and speaking engagements worldwide.
Mixed methods research integrates quantitative and qualitative approaches in a single study to provide a broader understanding of a research problem.
Creswell is a professor of family medicine and senior research scientist in the Michigan Mixed Methods Program at the University of Michigan.
Organizers said he has authored about 27 books on research methods.
Among his works is A Concise Introduction to Mixed Methods Research, whose second edition was published by SAGE in 2021.
Creswell and his wife, Dr. Mariko Hirose-Creswell, will deliver plenary presentations built around the fair’s theme, “Motivating a Mixed Methods Mindset.”
Hirose-Creswell is a cultural psychologist and research associate in the Graduate Department of Psychological Sciences at Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan.

Apart from the plenary talks, Halo-Halo 3 will feature research paper presentations, discussions on data analysis for mixed methods research and workshops on developing mixed methods projects.
The fair is organized by UST’s Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSED), together with the UST Graduate School and the Philippine Association of Mixed Methods Researchers and Emergent Scholars (PAMMRES).
RCSSED is UST’s social science research arm and conducts research and training across disciplines, including quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods designs.
The two-day event carries a registration fee of PHP 5,000.
Pre-registration is available through the organizers’ online form, while information on Halo-Halo 3 and previous editions is available through the event’s Facebook page.
