NMP Iloilo unveils ‘Giants of the Sea’

This Museums and Galleries Month, the National Museum of the Philippines – Iloilo unveils Megalodon: Giants of the Sea, featuring two fossil teeth of Otodus megalodon discovered in Jordan, Guimaras. These specimens are the first documented megalodon fossils from Western Visayas. They were discovered by Angelico Arellano and later deposited at the museum by him and Nereo Lujan.
Megalodon, whose name means “big tooth,” was the largest shark that ever lived. This marine giant could measure 15–18 meters in length, roughly the size of two buses, making it a dominant force in prehistoric seas. As the apex predator, it fed on baleen whales, sea turtles, and large fish in shallow waters circling the world, including the ancient waters of the Visayas.
The discovery of megalodon teeth in Guimaras adds an important piece to the fossil record of the Philippines, offering a glimpse into our Kadagatan millions of years ago.
Visit Megalodon: Giants of the Sea at the Geology and Paleontology Hall of #NMPIloilo, open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (4:30 PM cutoff). Admission is FREE. Explore the collection and educational materials and uncover the history surrounding this megafauna species.
