They were assisted by barangay officials and members of Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary of Brgy. Igang who also fulfilled their social responsibility in protecting the mother earth.
“The mangrove planting was done as part of the month-long celebration of the 30th National Statistics Month (NSM) in the Province of Guimaras, and we are glad for the strong support of the PSC member agencies by sending their representatives specifically the Provincial Planning and Development Office (1 rep); Provincial Tourism Office (2), Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (2); Department of Environment and Natural Resources (1); and the Philippine Statistics Authority (9) that contributed to the success of the activity” PSA-Guimaras Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
“Mangroves or Rhizophora are known as shorelines protector from tidal waves and floods. It prevents erosion by stabilizing sediments with their tangled root systems. They also maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land. Mangroves also served as valuable nursery areas for fish and invertebrates,” Losare added.
