PONTEVEDRA, Capiz — The municipality of Pontevedra is mourning the death of Mayor Henry D. Tumlos, who passed away Friday, Oct. 23, at Capiz Doctors’ Hospital in Roxas City following an illness.
Municipal officials and employees became emotional during the local government’s flag-raising ceremony Monday morning, Oct. 26, as they mourned the mayor’s passing.
Sangguniang Bayan Member Rolindo “Nene” Bulan appealed for public support and cooperation amid the leadership transition, with Vice Mayor Fermin “Ferne” Oquendo succeeding Tumlos as municipal mayor and Bulan, the highest-ranking municipal councilor, assuming the vice mayoral post under the rules of succession.
Under Section 44 of Republic Act 7160, or the Local Government Code of 1991, the vice mayor automatically succeeds the mayor in the event of a permanent vacancy, while the highest-ranking member of the Sangguniang Bayan assumes the vacant vice mayoral post.
Tumlos was reelected mayor of Pontevedra in the May 2025 local elections.
Reports said Tumlos’ remains will be brought Tuesday morning, Oct. 27, from De Jesus Funeral Home in Roxas City to his residence in Barangay Lantangan, Pontevedra.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, Oct. 25, Barangay Hipona joined the municipality in mourning the death of Tumlos.
“We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, loved ones, and everyone whose lives he touched through his service and leadership.
“His dedication and contributions to the Municipality of Pontevedra will always be remembered.
“His legacy of public service will continue to inspire us to serve our fellow Capizeños with sincerity and compassion.
“May the Lord grant his family strength and comfort during this difficult time, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.”
The schedule for interment has yet to be announced.
