19-year-old Iga Swiatek of Poland ended her Cinderella-story in the 2020 French Open Women’s singles holding and raising the championship trophy.
Probably the biggest surprise of this year’s Roland Garros, Swiatek turned things around and proved the doubters wrong after dumping world no. 4 Sofia Kenin in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Powerful and clever, she was too much to handle for the 4th-seeded Kenin after showcasing her offensive skillset from her on-point groundstrokes to her impressive netting attack.
Kenin had to settle for the silver after the Polish superstar handed her a beating in the second set and only held her service once in one of the best sets played by Swiatek.
“Maybe it just had to be like that, another underdog had to win a Grand Slam. In women’s tennis right now it’s crazy. I don’t know what’s going on. It’s overwhelming for me, it’s crazy,” said the tennis champion.
Tennis fans were all in shock after Swiatek ousted world no.1 Simona Halep in the fourth round of the tournament, 6-1, 6-2.
After the boosting win, Swiatek then rolled into the tourney and was locked-in up to the finals and inked her name in the tennis history books as the lowest-ranked tennis player to ever nab the Roland Garros title.
