Police pursue lead after newborn found dead in Toboso

BACOLOD CITY — Police said they have a lead on the person who allegedly abandoned a newborn baby found dead inside a sack in Barangay General Luna, Toboso, Negros Occidental, on Thursday.

Police Capt. Judesses Catalogo, spokesperson for the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO), said a resident reported the incident to authorities after noticing a sack left beside a neighbor’s house.

Upon checking the sack, authorities found the child wrapped in cloth.

Catalogo said police are awaiting the results of the postmortem examination to determine the cause of death, the infant’s sex, and how long the baby had been left at the site before being discovered.

He said police could not yet determine whether the infant had been aborted or died during or after birth.

Police said witnesses have surfaced and could help in the ongoing investigation.

If foul play is established, Catalogo said the person responsible may face an infanticide charge or another case, depending on the circumstances and the assessment of investigators.
