KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — The Philippines formally accepted the ASEAN Chairship for 2026 during the ceremonial handover at the closing of the 47th ASEAN Summit on Tuesday, October 28.
The country announced its leadership theme for 2026 as “Navigating our future, together,” signaling a forward-looking and collaborative vision for the region.
The Philippines also presented three thematic priorities: Peace and Security Anchors, Prosperity Corridors, and People Empowerment.
These pillars reflect the country’s aspiration for a resilient, inclusive, and united ASEAN grounded in peace, economic progress, and citizen participation.
Starting January 1, 2026, the Philippines will host a series of high-level meetings to operationalize these priorities and strengthen cooperation on pressing regional concerns.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., joined by Trade and Industry Secretary Cristina A. Roque, received the Chairship from Malaysia, which led ASEAN in 2025 under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
President Marcos expressed appreciation to Malaysia for its stewardship and reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to deepening ASEAN unity and collective growth.
Secretary Roque emphasized that the 2026 Chairship will promote regional stability, shared prosperity, and inclusive development.
“Our thematic priorities will guide ASEAN toward practical cooperation—ensuring peace that enables progress, prosperity that reaches every sector, and empowerment that drives participation from all,” Roque said.
The Philippines sees the Chairship as an opportunity to champion regional trade, attract investment, foster digital innovation, and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
It will also highlight the creative economy and promote the nation’s diverse culture, artistic talent, and natural heritage.
The country last held the ASEAN Chairship in 2017, coinciding with the bloc’s 50th anniversary.
Nearly a decade later, the Philippines is preparing once again to lead ASEAN toward a shared, secure, and prosperous future.
