The Philippines has been elected to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), solidifying its role in global nuclear safety and peaceful energy development.
Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said, “The Philippines’ election to the Board of Governors of the IAEA reinforces its role in shaping global policies on nuclear safety, security, and the peaceful use of atomic energy.”
The Philippines joins 34 other member states on the board, which makes key decisions on safeguards, technical cooperation, and responsible nuclear technology development worldwide.
This milestone aligns with the Philippine Nuclear Energy Plan, which aims to install up to 4,800 megawatts of nuclear capacity by 2040.
The Department of Energy said the board seat will enhance opportunities for technical cooperation in nuclear medicine, agriculture, food security, and energy.
The DOE also emphasized that the country’s participation strengthens its recognition as a responsible nuclear partner and underscores its commitment to science, innovation, and sustainable development.
