The La Paz Football Ground is now equipped with a world-class PHP 17.3-million lighting system following its official illumination ceremony on November 12.
The project was led by Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN), through its thermal subsidiary Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC), in partnership with the Iloilo City Government and with support from One Meralco Foundation (OMF).
The upgraded facility — the first plaza-based football field in Western Visayas to meet international lighting standards — will now allow extended evening play, training, and community events with better visibility and safety.
MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio said the investment reflects the company’s long-term commitment to community development.
“It is a privilege for us to continue serving this community, not only through energy, but through initiatives that uplift lives and empower people,” Rubio said.
“At MGEN, we believe that our role goes beyond generating power — it is about empowering people, strengthening communities, and lighting the path toward a better future.”
Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Trenas-Chu said the project aligns with the city’s vision of revitalizing public spaces.
“This project is part of our broader vision — to transform La Paz Plaza into more than just a park, but a vibrant living space that celebrates life, community, and identity,” Trenas-Chu said.
“We call it placemaking — creating spaces that reflect who we are and what we aspire to be.”
The city government will oversee the technical operations and maintenance of the facility.
The lighting upgrade also supports the sports development efforts of the Iloilo City Sports Academy (ICSA) and the Sports Kickstarter Program, both of which provide free training for children and youth.
The illumination ceremony coincided with the launch of “Paskwa sa La Paz Plaza,” an annual Christmas display tradition that began in 2011 when PEDC started its operations in Iloilo City.
Over the years, PEDC has also rehabilitated the plaza’s tennis court and established the koi lagoon and butterfly garden as part of its community development projects.
Among those present at the ceremony were Antonio “Jun” Cabalhug, FVP–Site Head of MGEN Thermal Panay Site; Jeffrey O. Tarayao, president of One Meralco Foundation; John Patrick Gregorio, chairperson of the Philippine Sports Commission; athletes; barangay captains; and other stakeholders.
