The Sean Sweeney era will officially begin in Orlando after the Magic formally introduced him as their new chief tactician for the 2026-27 NBA season.
Following a championship qualification campaign with the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach, Sweeney will immediately buckle down to work as he is set to lead the young Orlando squad, which is fresh off a frustrating playoff trip after a first-round loss to Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons.
On June 19, 2026, Sweeney was formally introduced by the Magic in a press conference and was welcomed by Orlando’s president of basketball operations, Jeff Weltman.
“I want to introduce to you guys the next coach of the Orlando Magic, Sean Sweeney,” Weltman said.
Sweeney will replace Jamahl Mosley, who saw his five-year tenure end with a win-loss record of 189-221 and led Orlando to three NBA playoff trips.
The Minnesota native began his coaching career in Brooklyn during the 2013-14 season, when he was promoted to assistant coach under Jason Kidd.
Sweeney had three stops before reinforcing the Spurs’ coaching staff, inking deals with the Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, and Dallas Mavericks.
During San Antonio’s magical playoff campaign, Sweeney focused primarily on the Spurs’ defensive system, which became an integral part of their season’s success.
Sweeney’s defensive philosophy helped San Antonio finish third overall in the NBA’s defensive rating, anchored by Victor Wembanyama, who won the 2025-26 Defensive Player of the Year award.
It was in the middle of their NBA Finals series against the New York Knicks when rumors started to circulate about his move to the Eastern Conference.
“Fundamentals are your foundation,” Sweeney said during the press conference.
“You need great daily habits. We need to concentrate on our daily process. We have to make sure that we continue to improve throughout the course of the season.”
