LEМERY, Iloilo — Residents of Barangay Alcantara in Lemery no longer have to contend with flooded crossings and disrupted travel following the completion of a new bridge linking communities along the Iloilo-Capiz boundary.
Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. led the inauguration of the 105-meter haunch bridge in Barangay Alcantara on June 18.
The PHP 8.4 million infrastructure project was completed by the Iloilo Provincial Engineer’s Office in 2024.
The bridge replaced an overflow crossing that frequently became impassable during heavy rains, limiting the movement of residents, motorists, and goods between neighboring barangays and the town proper.
Aside from the bridge structure, the project included slope protection works, a cross-drainage system, metal guardrails, and a line ditch canal to improve safety and durability.
Barangay Captain Enrico Perasol Jr. said the project has significantly improved mobility in the community, particularly during the rainy season when flooding previously disrupted travel.
“This bridge is a huge help to our residents because we used to face serious difficulties during the rainy season whenever flooding occurred,” Perasol said, expressing gratitude to the provincial government.
Barangay Alcantara serves as the gateway between Iloilo and Capiz, marking the boundary between Lemery and Dumarao.
The bridge is expected to strengthen connectivity and ensure safer travel for residents and commuters passing through the area.
During the inauguration, Defensor assured residents that the provincial government would continue implementing infrastructure projects aimed at improving living conditions and supporting local development in Lemery and other communities.
Also present during the ceremony were Vice Gov. Lee Ann Debuque, Lemery Mayor Oscar Villegas Jr., Vice Mayor Lowel Arban, Liga ng mga Barangay President Pedro Suyo Jr., Sangguniang Bayan Member Nikki Ann Dominique Otero, Provincial Population Officer Ruel Von Superio, and Local Youth Development Officer Sheila Marie Tuarez.
