Nxled eyes fifth straight PVL win against Capital1

Games Saturday (Nov. 7)
(Philsports Arena)
1 p.m. – Nxled vs. Capital1
3:30 p.m. – National U vs. AFP (Spikers’ Turf)
6 p.m. – Choco Mucho vs. Akari
With the semifinal race heating up and every victory carrying greater importance, unbeaten Nxled seeks to keep its perfect record intact and move a step closer to a coveted Final Four berth when it takes on a struggling but dangerous Capital1 side in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference Siklab Series at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The Chameleons have emerged as one of the tournament’s early pacesetters, living up to their preconference billing with a straight-set victory, two four-set wins and a hard-earned five-set triumph.
Their impressive run has given them the solo lead after PLDT ended Creamline’s four-game winning streak in a thrilling four-set encounter Thursday.
Capital1, meanwhile, has yet to find its rhythm despite the much-heralded acquisition of former Cignal standouts Vanie Gandler and Erika Santos.
The Solar Spikers have struggled to translate their considerable firepower into consistent results, settling for a 2-3 record as the elimination round enters its crucial final stretch.
Back-to-back defeats have pushed Capital1 down to seventh place, leaving it with little margin for error.
The Solar Spikers may need to sweep their remaining three matches to revive their semifinal bid in an increasingly crowded race for the Final Four.
Choco Mucho, Farm Fresh and PLDT all have identical 3-2 records, while Nxled leads the standings at 4-0, followed by Creamline at 4-1.
Akari also carries a 2-3 record, with Galeries Tower clinging to slim hopes at 1-4.
ZUS Coffee, meanwhile, is virtually out of contention after five straight losses.
Nxled shoots for its fifth consecutive victory and a firmer hold on the top spot when it faces Capital1 at 1 p.m.
The Choco Mucho-Akari showdown follows at 6 p.m., with both teams looking to regain lost ground in the race for the Final Four.
Sandwiched between the PVL matches is a Spikers’ Turf encounter pitting the National University-Archipelago Builders Bulldogs against the Armed Forces of the Philippines Cavaliers at 3:30 p.m.
For Nxled, however, the challenge goes beyond preserving its unbeaten run.
Leading the Chameleons’ charge, Brooke Van Sickle has been quick to temper expectations, stressing that the team remains a work in progress in a conference where momentum can shift in an instant.
After pouring in 19 points to power Nxled past Choco Mucho in four sets last Tuesday, the Filipino-American hitter acknowledged that there is still plenty to learn as she adjusts to the demands of the competition.
“Definitely, still learning. I mean, this is the first time I’ve ever been in a conference like this. And it is very challenging because momentum can change at any moment,” Van Sickle said.
“Also just trying to stay warm. And there’s some older players, you know, I’m getting up there. So it’s a little rough to have to keep the body, you know, and then keep the mind going when you’re used to something. But now it’s, I mean, it’s kind of cool that, you know, you’re going to grow as a player this way. So learn things about yourself,” she added.
Van Sickle and the Chameleons will have their hands full against a formidable Capital1 attacking trio led by Bella Belen, Gandler and Santos.
Their ability to contain the Solar Spikers’ offensive attacks, particularly at the net, could prove decisive.
Nxled has no shortage of firepower of its own, with Myla Pablo and Jonah Sabete-Escamillan providing ample support to Van Sickle.
Middle blocker MJ Phillips also remains a key presence at the net, having contributed 13 points, including three blocks, in Nxled’s four-set victory over Choco Mucho.
But the Chameleons will need more than their offensive arsenal to neutralize Capital1’s dangerous hitters and deal a potentially damaging blow to the Solar Spikers’ dwindling semifinal hopes.
Attention will also turn to the Choco Mucho-Akari clash, with both squads eager to bounce back from recent setbacks and reignite their respective semifinal campaigns.
Eya Laure and Sisi Rondina-Rosales are expected to spearhead the Flying Titans’ attack, while the Chargers will bank on Eli Soyud, Faith Nisperos, Ivy Lacsina and middle blocker Fifi Sharma to deliver.
Akari enters the crucial encounter determined to rebound from a painful five-set loss to the previously winless Galeries Tower Highrisers, a setback that stalled its semifinal push.
With the elimination round entering its decisive phase, the Chargers know that another slip could prove costly in a tightly contested race for the Final Four.
