BACOLOD City – The Negrense Volunteers for Change (NVC) Foundation has delivered 20,000 Mingo meals for the earthquake victims in North Cotabato last Saturday.
According to NVC Foundation president Milagros (Millie) Kilayko, the meals were distributed to the evacuation centers at Makilala town, which was one of the hardest hit by the earthquake, and Tulunan town.
Mindanao was hit by series of strong tremors in the past two weeks, which affected thousands of families and their children.
Mingo is a nutritious instant complementary food made of rice, mongo (mung beans), and malunggay (moringa) for children, primarily for infants and toddlers, but is also used for older children in areas of need.
The group started producing Mingo meals in 2011 to provide complementary food, targeting clusters of children aged 6–60 months in deprived communities through a systematic and holistic approach.
Kilayko said the group is also planning to provide meals to the families and their children in Digos City, Davao del Sur, which was also one of the affected areas of the powerful quakes.
Kilayko expressed her gratitude to everyone who already reached out to help them serve the disaster-stricken victims in Cotabato.
“As long as friends continue to support this journey, we will not stop serving Mingo until we are assured that every child is nutritionally equipped to face the physical, emotional and mental challenges of their current state,” she said.
