ILOILO CITY — A 27-year-old woman died after her motorcycle crashed into the rear of a parked gasoline tanker truck in San Miguel, Iloilo, early Saturday, Oct. 10.
Police identified the victim as alias Jai of Barangay Sulong, Alimodian, Iloilo.
She sustained multiple injuries in the crash.
Personnel of the San Miguel Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office brought her to Aleosan District Hospital in Alimodian, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Reports indicated that Jai was on her way home after working as an operations manager at an upscale restaurant in Mandurriao, Iloilo City, when the crash occurred.
She was driving a Honda ADV 160 motorcycle along Barangay San Jose in San Miguel when she struck the rear of the parked tanker at about 4:20 a.m.
Maj. Bryan Alejo, San Miguel police chief, said the truck driver, identified as Ian of Dumangas, Iloilo, and his companion had parked the vehicle to have coffee at a roadside shop in front of the Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. Iloilo Plant.
The truck had come from Aklan and was headed to Alimodian when the two stopped for a coffee break.
Alejo said the crash occurred on a straight, four-lane road in a well-lit area.
“There could be several factors why the road crash happened. One of which is the rider dozed off while behind the wheel,” he said.
Alejo said Jai was wearing a crash helmet, but it was not enough to protect her from the impact.
The truck driver was taken into police custody following the crash.
Alejo said the driver was later released after the reglementary detention period had lapsed.
He said settlement talks were underway between Jai’s family and the driver’s camp.
Messages of condolence were sent to Jai’s family following her death.
Jai was also reportedly a local beauty queen and the daughter of a Sangguniang Bayan member.
