A 26-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son died after their motorcycle collided with a van on the afternoon of May 30 in San Dionisio, Iloilo.
The victims, Jonalyn and her son Ethan, both residents of Barangay Nipa, San Dionisio, suffered multiple injuries on various parts of their bodies.
Earlier that day, Jonalyn was invited by friends to a gathering at Javellana Beach Resort in San Dionisio.
She brought her son with her and arrived at the resort around 10 a.m.
Her friends claimed she consumed alcoholic drinks during the gathering.
She decided to leave the resort at around 3 p.m.
Captain Edward Villanis, San Dionisio police chief, said Jonalyn’s friends advised her not to drive home and even offered to take her and her son.
However, Jonalyn reportedly left without informing them and brought Ethan with her.
Several motorists said they saw her riding with her head drooping at the handlebars.
They tried to warn her, but she did not respond.
While navigating a road in Barangay Siempreviva, Jonalyn’s motorcycle encroached on the opposite lane and struck the headlight of an oncoming Foton van.
The van driver, Jesus, 72, of Barangay Siempreviva, said he attempted to avoid the crash but could not react in time.
Jesus sustained a minor injury from the incident.
Villanis said it is possible Jonalyn fell asleep while driving.
The victims were rushed to Sara District Hospital, where Jonalyn was declared dead shortly after arrival.
Ethan was transferred to Western Visayas Medical Center but was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Villanis said settlement talks are already ongoing between the families involved.
