Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) earned major recognition at the 2025 Asian Power Awards in Kuala Lumpur on Oct. 24, winning key distinctions that underscore its growing leadership in regional power generation.
MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio was named CEO of the Year, while MGEN Renewables received Power Plant Upgrade of the Year – Philippines for its Baras Solar project in Rizal.
MGEN’s Singapore-based subsidiary, PacificLight Power Pte. Ltd. (PLP), also received two accolades: Fast-Track Power Plant of the Year (Gold) and Power Plant Upgrade of the Year – Singapore.
Rubio was honored for his strategic leadership in driving MGEN’s role in the Philippines’ energy transition, expanding its power portfolio and leading major projects.
These include the MTerra Solar project — expected to become the world’s largest integrated solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage facility — as well as the country’s first integrated liquefied natural gas complex in Batangas and several other solar and battery storage initiatives.
Under Rubio’s leadership, MGEN is on track to exceed its 1,500 MW renewable energy capacity target by 2027 — three years ahead of schedule — as part of its broader strategy to more than double its net sellable capacity to 10,357 MW by 2030.
MGEN Renewables received its award for the expansion of Baras Solar, the first and only solar farm in Rizal province, now operating at 80.1 MWac and supplying clean energy to surrounding communities.
The project created jobs for more than 1,600 workers — including over 300 women — during construction, highlighting MGEN’s commitment to inclusive local economic growth.
The expansion supports the Department of Energy’s renewable energy goals of 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040, reinforcing MGEN’s drive to help build a sustainable, inclusive energy future for the Philippines.
PLP’s award-winning efforts included Asia’s first Advanced Turbine Efficiency Package (ATEP) upgrade at PacificLight, which earned Power Plant Upgrade of the Year – Singapore, and its 100 MW Fast Start Services project, recognized with the Fast-Track Power Plant of the Year (Gold) award for enhancing grid resilience in Singapore.
These awards highlight PacificLight’s key role in improving energy reliability and efficiency under the MGEN portfolio.
MGEN remains committed to its mission of “Powering a Better Tomorrow” by delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions that address the energy trilemma.
These honors from the Asian Power Awards affirm MGEN’s growing influence in the region and its central role in advancing the Philippines’ clean energy transition. (Photos courtesy of MGEN)
